Is Doug the first UK Angler to take a 200LB+ Mekong Cat?! Please let us know.
Doug had fished Bung Sam Ran many times in the past but this time Kiwi Fishing arranged to show the Guys a different style of fishing Bung Sam Ran. Doug lifted his personal best from 25kg to great new limits, 93kg. Doug is a keen UK Angler and has fished some great International Venues. He had not realised that it was possible to target the larger Giant Mekong Deltas at Bung Sam Ran, but under the guide and supervision of “Kiwi” from Kiwi Fishing Bangkok, Kiwi Fishing Bangkok works with Siam Fishing tours to offer the best service to Clients, Kiwi adopted a different baiting style and fishing technique not seen before at this particular venue. A technique that in a single month alone has produced a new pending IGFA record Mekong Catfish and two fish over the 200lb mark, now for fishing in bangkok that is not bad!.

“The strike signaled the start of a relentless, non stop run of approximately 150 metres to the other side of the lake. It was like a steam train slowly pulling out of the station and not stopping, not even once. It was unbelievable. I played the fish for 50 minutes on heavy duty deep sea fishing gear with a harness. Any less robust gear would be burned up and destroyed. Without the harness it would’ve been impossible for one person to hold on to that fish. To say these fish are powerful is an understatement to say the least!
Once it surfaced I could not believe the length and width of this fish. Its head was unbelievably broad and it's tail fin unbelievably wide. After a 5 minute diving session by Kiwi untangling it from some obstructions he finally got its head out of the water and into the net and where Kiwi swam it to more shallow water so we could photograph this massive Giant Mekong Delta Catfish.”
Because Kiwi is out to break records for his clients he has designed and built an official IGFA weigh station it is a Bi-Pod design so is fully portable that has a digital system and a specially built sling for CATCH and RELEASE, so as not to harm the fish, it can weigh a 200kg fish to official IGFA Weigh Station standards and higher as this is a very good system it is also the first in Thailand.
For the safety of this fish though, we decided not to lift fully out of the water, instead letting it recover in the shallows before releasing. This fish had only just been landed days before so we knew the weight already. However it was bigger than the current pending world record of 76.3 kg taken by an angler only last week, also under the guide of Kiwi, but sadly the landing of this fish broke the IGFA Rules.
But all in all a great fish and a great fight, well done Doug!
