We have been running a feeding programme at the Nichada Country Club here in bangkok this involves, 2 bags of 50kg of Lam (rice meal) on the bottom of the lake, like really big Tea Bags, these are changed weekly, I also dive and inspect these as the week goes on and will split them one at a time.

In addition to this we feed daily 40kg of Lam. This is mixed with water and made into balls about 10cm (4 inches) across.

The idea is that this lake is BIG and the fish don’t know any of the Baits that are used today. The idea is to feed them Lam so they learn to eat that then we can fish with Lam as a bait. At the moment the Giant Mekong Delta Catfish feed on algae, algae feeding fish are  hard fish to get on a hook!

Ok so with all this feed going in the water you can imagine that there have been some changes! The small fish are going nuts, this has also had an effect, the Arapaima now feed there. It sends a chill up the spine to watch hundreds of fish feeding then see them disappear, knowing that there is a BIG Arapaima feeding, soon after you will see a tail coming out the water.

Whilst all this is happening the Pacu are also going nuts, you can see by the photos that there are some good fish coming out of the water, but they are being a bit of a pest as they feed fast and hard, to put it another way they are fast violent feeders. The Giant Mekong Delta Catfish are slow feeders, and don’t like the Pacu’s style of feeding, the Arapaima on the other hand love a meat ball of fish.

So on advice from the best in the industry (Bung Sam Ran) I have been told to go fishing!
The Pacu become shy fast, so it is not hard to move them on, all it takes is some hard days of fishing, well I think I can handle that task.

I now have to change the feeding programme a bit, depending on how you make the ball of Lam depends on if it floats or sinks. The smaller fish feed on the top as a rule, so we will add lots of floating balls to keep the Arapaima around. We will also have sinking balls to allow the Giant Mekong Delta Catfish to bottom feed.

And with all this happening I do get to report a interesting catch, a fresh water Turtle.

Here is the story of the hunt and capture.

This Turtle had been popping its head up where we have been fishing for the last couple of days, on this day I noticed it was a lot closer than before, so I picked up the net and stalked it, knowing that it was shy to humans.
I managed to approach from behind and with a swift motion with the net I landed this catch. OK I know it is not an IGFA catch but I thought it was interesting, it is not often you go fishing and catch a Turtle in bangkok.

Well the news from Bung Sam Ran is that the big fish will come! This is the same feeding style that Bung Sam Ran used to remove all the BIG fish from a lake 8 times bigger. Bung Sam Ran are getting excited with the thought of lure fishing the Arapaima from the country club then moving on to the boat to finish the fight, no other company can offer fishing Arapaima with this style, this is planned for next week, and of course the scales will be handy.
