Rod tubes travel badly, cost money on most airlines and arrive damaged often enough to be a real risk. For heavy static fishing, hiring at the venue is straightforward, cheap by comparison, and the gear is matched to the fish.
The exception is lure fishing. If you are chasing snakehead you want your own rod, your own reel and lures you trust, and all of it fits in hand luggage apart from the hooks. That is an easy bag to pack and worth the effort.
Reels suffer here. Heat, humidity and fine dust get into everything, and salt if you go out to sea. Whatever you bring gets stripped and greased when you get home, and cheap reels do not survive a week of forty kilo fish.
Terminal tackle is worth bringing regardless. Hooks, swivels, leader material and a spool of decent braid weigh nothing, and while everything is available locally, the quality varies more than the price does.
One thing nobody packs and everybody wishes they had: a small towel and a change of shirt in the car. You will be wetter than you expect.
